BLURB
Winner of Madan Puraskar 2068, Seto Dharti shows the life story of a child widow named Tara who got married at around 6 years old. By the time she was 10, her husband had died. It mainly focuses on the psychological, physical and emotional struggle of a young widow who is bounded by the social double standards.
MY READING EXPERIENCE
I liked the beginning part the most. It is about Tara's childhood, which is innocent and beautiful. She and her sister plays make a believe games with her friends. The setting takes place around the time when women barely had any rights. Present social issues like child marriage and unmatched marriage were common and patriarchy was dense. Some events made me angry and some made me cry.
WHAT I LIKED IN SETO DHARTI
Amar Neupane has done a remarkable job on telling us the story of a child widow.
This book mainly covers the emotional and psychological struggle Tara goes through in her life. She represents those women who lived a life within the boundary set by society. We see her struggle during her adolescence, her second marriage was never a question because she was a woman. The book gives the picture of a patriarchal society and gender inequality.
The story also represents other women such as Yamuna, who lived on her own terms though she was also a widow and Pabitra, who had a sound marital life.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE IN SETO DHARTI
I was expecting that Tara would marry or have family or get out of the boundaries, but none of these happened. There is no character development. The whole story is very sad and heart touching. The later part was length. The book could have been shorter.
RATING
⭐⭐⭐
I am rating Seto Dharti 3 out 4 starts which means I liked the book and I recommend it to everyone. This is a must read book.
Through the story of a very ordinary character, the book shows us the cruel ways of Nepalese society.
You and I are also the part of the society and It's way to know your responsibility as a member of a society.
Good job. Keep it up!
