The titles of Folk of the Air triology really intrigued me, so I picked up this series without knowing anything about them. I didn't even bother to know what's the book was about.

Here's the series review of Folk of the Air triology by Holly Black.

Synopsis of The Cruel Prince from goodreads:
Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

BLURB

Jude's parents are murdered by a faerie named Madoc who eventually turns out to be her stepfather.

Madoc feels the responsibility of Jude and her twin sister, Taryn, takes them to faerie land and provide all care and protection they need. In fact they are provided with equal trainings and skills as other faerie children.

Jude was really young when this happened. She and her twin sister are accustomed to the ways of faeries (their pointed nose, different skin colours, tails and magics). They both have spent most of their life in faerie land rather than in mortal land. Moreover, they long to be like one of those faeries.

Living with faeries, Jude realizes her vulnerability because she has to wear enchantments in order to repel the magic of faeries. She knows that if she wants to live with them, she needs to be powerful enough hence, she grows up to be ambitious.

WHAT I LIKED IN FOLK OF THE AIR TRIOLOGY

The Folk of the Air series has a lot of twists. It unfolds the story by disclosing the relationship of our main character with other characters. For example, the relationship of Madoc with Jude; surprisingly Madoc turns out to be a good fatherly figure.

Her relationship with her twin sister who is completely opposite of her and repeatedly betrays. Yet Jude is easily forgiving.

Her relationship with Cardan, an evil boy who takes every opportunity to make her feel inferior. Cardan is a terrible guy who is unapologetically cruel to Jude, but he secretly likes her.

At the end of the story, those who were expected to be good turns out to be very bad and those who were considered cruel turns out to be good and innocent.

The world building of faerie land is on point. It was exciting to see the secrets unfold, people scheming at each other for power and witnessing things that I didn't expect at all.

Events after events, there is reversal in the role of power and loyalty.

This book is the story of power, ambitions, love, magics and schemes. The romantic part is too adorable.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE IN FOLK OF THE AIR SERIES

The ending was too sweet that I might as well get diabetes. Everything settles down in the end like a fairy tale.
I wasn't satisfied that the ending didn't go well for Madoc. He was a very good father. The only bad thing about him was that he craved violence and war which is not good for faeries since they can't reproduce as easily as mortals do.

The world building was awesome. I enjoyed reading all of the books. There is always something happening in the book that it won't let you get bored. Overall, a very beautiful story of magic, power and schemes.

RATING

⭐⭐⭐

I am rating this book 3 out of 4 stars which means I liked the book and I recommend it if you like fantasy, faeries and power games.
